Dental Care for Birth to Two Years FAQs

Caring & Capable Pediatric Dentist in Levittown

At Little Smiles of Levittown, parents of babies often ask why baby teeth are important since they will eventually fall out. Baby teeth are important for facial growth and development, and they guide the eruption of the primary teeth. Our dental care for children from birth to two years old focuses on caring for the primary teeth and preventing decay, which can cause pain, infection, swelling, and problems for the permanent teeth.

If you have questions about your baby’s teeth, please contact our office at (516) 217-8910.

  • How do I care for my baby’s teeth?

One of the most important things you can do to care for your baby’s teeth is to schedule his or her first visit shortly after the first teeth erupt, usually by six months, or at least by their first birthday. Dr. Lee will examine the baby’s teeth to make sure they are erupting normally, and provide information about how to minimize caries development and promote dental health. We recommend visits every six months to preserve your child’s dental health.

  • How can I ensure my child maintains excellent dental and oral health?

In addition to regular visits to the pediatric dentist, you can help keep the teeth healthy with good oral hygiene at home. Once the back molars grow in, use a soft toothbrush with either water or non-fluoridated toothpaste. Avoid putting the baby to bed with a bottle of milk or juice to prevent tooth decay. While thumb sucking is normal, the habit should be discontinued by the age of four years old. Continued thumb sucking and pacifier use can cause unwanted orthodontic changes.

  • What do I do if my child has a dental emergency?
    • Have your child evaluated as quickly as possible
    • Call 911 or go the emergency room for serious injuries
    • Contact our office for advice and an appointment
