Dental Care for 12 to 18 Years FAQs

Levittown Pediatric Dentist Fulfilling Your Child’s Dental Needs

During the teen years, tooth decay is often caused by the frequent use of sodas and sports drinks. Although sports drinks are often used by athletes, they contain a lot of sugar and acid that promote decay. At Little Smiles of Levittown, we provide routine dental care and treatments to prevent cavities and dental problems in adolescents aged 12 to 18 years old.

Please call (516) 217-8910 to schedule an appointment for your teen.

  • How do I protect my child’s teeth during this period of their life?

Some common causes of damage to the teeth in the teen years include teeth grinding and sports injuries. Teeth grinding can cause pain and soreness in the teeth and jaws. Sports injuries can cause damage to the mouth and teeth, including permanent tooth loss. We offer custom mouth guards to provide the protection needed to prevent permanent damage.

  • What are mouth guards useful for?
    • Preventing TMJ caused by teeth grinding
    • Avoiding injuries to the mouth when playing sports
    • Reducing concussions and severe brain injuries
  • What are dental sealants, and should my child have them?

Sealants are an effective preventive treatment for your adolescent child. Sealants can help reduce cavities in the back molars by as much as 70%. The back molars are particularly prone to decay. Sealants are applied to the chewing surfaces of the teeth to help keep food particles and bacteria out of the tiny grooves and crevices on the teeth.

  • My adolescent child wants to eliminate their bad breath. What can I do to help?

Bad breath is a common problem for teens. This can be reduced with good oral hygiene, including regular brushing and flossing. Adolescents should be taught the importance of brushing the tongue to remove plaque and keep their breath fresh. In some cases, asthma, sinus infections, and throat infections can contribute to bad breath. If this is a problem, speak to your child’s doctor.
